An enhanced police presence in Newtonmore continued following the sudden death of a man.

The man, who was 87-years-old, died in hospital after officers were called to his home on Tuesday morning.

Police received a call around 11am on Tuesday to attend the house, located in the Kingussie Road area of the Badenoch village, after receiving reports of a man taking unwell.

The man later died with police launching an investigation to establish the circumstances leading up to his death.

However, officers concluded yesterday that these were not suspicious.

It is understood the cause of death is being considered a medical issue.

As part of investigations, police officers have been keeping close guard outside the man’s property since Tuesday morning.

Police officers have also been visiting the doors of locals within the area as they sought to piece together the circumstances leading up to the man’s death.

Officers remained on scene yesterday with a police vehicle present in the driveway.

A force spokeswoman said: “Emergency services were called to a property on Kingussie Road, Newtonmore, around 11am on Tuesday September 1, following a report an 87-year-old man had taken unwell.

“The man was transferred to hospital where he later died.

“Inquiries remain ongoing however the death is not being treated as suspicious.

“A report has been sent to the procurator fiscal.”

The quiet Badenoch town is home to just shy of 1,000 people, with the house located a short distance away from the entrance to the popular Highland Folk Museum.

Local councillor John Bruce said: “It is always a sad time when somebody dies and I am saddened to hear of this death.

“We don’t tend to have this sort of thing with a large police presence in parts of the Highlands and seldom Newtonmore.

“I hope the police conclude their investigations very quickly and the poor man’s family are supported and receive the necessary explanation as to what happened.

“I understand police have been investigating since Tuesday at the house in Newtonmore and I have full faith in their ability.

“It is very sad when something like this happens and my thoughts are very much with the man’s family and friends.”

Fellow councillor Bill Lobban said: “It is sad to hear of anyone dying and especially sad if the man has died alone with nobody around him.

“My thoughts are very much with the friends and family of the man at this time.”
